Our mission is to address historic injustices in the tea industry by growing and making tea with the free, prior and informed consent of local communities . Unlike other brands that are owned by overseas owners who pay overseas 3rd party checkers to provide a stamp of approval, Bandalel is majority owned by the local communities in which the tea is grown.
From 1902, the British seized Kipsigis land and leased it exclusively to European white settlers. Local communities were forcibly relocated to ‘native reserves.’ After leading continued resistance, one clan - the Talai - was sent to a concentration camp in 1934. The most recent cases of forced resettlement took place in the 1950s. The internment of the Talai only ended with Kenyan independence in 1963. These traumatic events remain within the living memory of many families. The issue of historic injustice needs to be addressed.
Bandalel works closely with local communities based on the principles of "free, prior and informed consent" to establish grow, source and pack teas that have a respect for human rights and regenerative nature as a core value, not as a token after-thought.
